Is It Worth to Migrate to Magento 2 Right Away?

migration to magento 2

Last week, we published an article in which we informed you about the most important event for Magento community - Magento 2.0 release. We indicated 5 main reasons to upgrade to the latest platform. We informed you about all new and improved features presented by Magento. But today, we would like to discuss the other side of the coin.

Our Sam Ecommerce clients approached us with the question - Is it time to migrate to Magento 2? And it forced us to ponder this issue. Together with them, we analysed all basic aspects of migration to Magento 2.0 and consequently came to the common conclusion. So, in this article we would like to share our thoughts with you.

Will Migration to Magento 2.0 Really Boost Your Ecommerce Sales?

If you visit Magento site, you will see that Community Edition 1.x is in the Release Archive. It influences people emotionally. Nobody wants to deal with something outdated and choose to spend more in order to be in the mainstream . At the same time, the first site pages are full with information about a new platform version. Magento professionals call it the next generation digital commerce solution. And it stands to reason that this Magento 2.0 release opens up new opportunities before Magento developers. Now, they have got a chance to study new options and increase their knowledges and skills. But what does the release mean for companies that offer Magento services and for their first-hand clients? How can it influence their work?

Time for Eliminating Gaps

Just try to recall - how much time did improvement of Magento 1 take then? How many errors were fixed in attempts to make this platform perfect? We can answer-a lot. It is a common thing to happen. When something new appears on the market, it has to become time proved. And only then it will be worth while.

Magento really succeed in creating fast and secure open source platform, but it took a long period of time. The same may occur with Magento 2. Testing might show some errors and drawbacks and their solving might become long-lasting. Besides, Beta version has been launched, developers still cannot be sure that everything works correctly.

Time for Studying  New Platform

It will take a lot of time to study this new version. Some Magento developers have already start doing it and Magento helps them with this challenge. This year, it has released special Magento 2 Trained Partner Program that aims to upskill developers. But there is one condition - only Magento Solution and Associate Partners can to participate in this program. It means that those who do not fall into this category have to study this new version by their own efforts. Of course, it will take even more time and consequently may not suit some clients. Fortunately, Magento 1.x will be officially supported during next three years, so you do not need to upgrade right now. But, it has already stopped to release new features or updates for Magento 1. The company fully concentrates on Magento 2 and its performance as well as features/updates.

Money Matter

More time required for site development results in overspending for store owners. And maybe not all of them may agree with such conditions. And this is only a tip of the iceberg. If the client wants to upgrade the website to Magento 2.0, he has to be ready to invest a great deal of money. New Magento Enterprise Edition costs almost three times as much as Magento 1 EE. One more extra spending is paying for new improved equipment, for example servers and modules. As they cannot be used for Magento 2, developers have to change them. Moreover, when you migrate, you use special tool that is able to transfer only store data. But we cannot apply it for moving theme and code customizations that include 3rd party extensions. You will have to redone them on Magento 2. Consequently, extra investments need to be made in the visual and functional revamp. So, the question is - Would a client want to overpay here? Does it really guarantee the sales growth? Let’s try to answer these questions.

Magento 2 platform more spendings

You have own well performing site that brings you high profit. You use the versions, which are not really outdated. So, we do not see any  reasons to rush to migrate your store. The best way is just to start exploring Magento 2.0 leisurely. You can consult your partners and ask them to disclose their thoughts.

Conclusion

All points indicated above put the necessity of migration to Magento 2 in question. Usually, early adopters face with the technical problems, which have not  been resolved before them. And they do not have enough knowledges and skills to cope with them. So, our advice is to look firstly, how others implement it. We do not argue against migration to Magento 2.0. We just want to show all sides of this issue. And it is up to you to make the final decision.
